Safety at the Gas Pump     If you are like many motorists that return to their cars during refueling, you may want to think twice. Re-entering your vehicle could trigger a fire sparked by static electricity. The Petroleum Equipment Institute has documented more than 75 incidents nationwide of static ignition at the fuel pump since 1999.     Potential risk occurs when static chargesare generated as the driver slides out of the car to replace the gasoline nozzle. When motorists touch the metal nozzle they create an electric spark, which can ignite the fuel vapors and cause a fire. To minimize your risk, remain at the pump while fueling your car. If you do enter your car, touch a metal part of the vehicle before touching the gas nozzle to discharge any static buildup.
